HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The governor of Montana has signed an agreement to settle about $6 million for trails and water infrastructure in East Helena.

Independent Record reported Monday that Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock signed the agreement Monday ensuring the community would have clean drinking water and that the former smelter site would provide recreational use.

Officials say the decision would allocate $3.2 million to developing the Greenway Trail linking East Helena to Montana City, another $2.1 million to water infrastructure and an additional $160,000 for watershed and habitat work along Prickly Pear Creek.

Officials say the money is separate from the about $115 million Asarco paid to clean up contaminated land in the region.

Officials say the signed plan allows for long-term operation and maintenance of the land along Prickly Pear Creek.
