The Montana GOP has lodged an ethics complaint against Gov. Steve Bullock alleging he used state resources during his run for president last year. The Montana Republican Party alleges Bullock used a Twitter and Facebook account for both official and campaign purposes in violation of state law.

Political ethics complaints of this kind are public once lodged. Montana’s Commissioner of Political Practices hasn’t accepted or rejected the complaint yet, nor judged its merit.

Marissa Perry, Bullock’s communication director, says the governor's representatives worked with the Commissioner of Political Practices office long before the complaint was filed to make sure his use of social media was in compliance with state law.

The complaint comes as national news organizations, including the Associated Press and New York Times, report Bullock may enter Montana’s U.S. Senate race, which Bullock previously said he had no interest in.

His entrance into the race could draw national interest as Democrats attempt to pick up the seat currently held by Republican Steve Daines.

The filing deadline for candidates to appear on Montana’s 2020 ballot is Monday.
