A political newcomer from Stevensville filed for Montana’s U.S. Senate seat Tuesday, triggering a two-way Republican primary with incumbent Steve Daines.
Daniel R. Larson said he filed to run for U.S. Senate in response to the lack of Republican challengers to Daines. He wants to give conservative Montanans another choice.
“My disappointment with Daines has been kind of growing for a while, and I think that the Republican Party has alienated a lot of people with conservative ideals," he said.
Larson feels the party is currently “missing moral courage.” The 40-year-old manages two Bitterroot-Valley Ace Hardware stores.
Larson is running against U.S. Senator Steve Daines who was first elected to federal office in 2012 as a U.S. congressman. Daines went on to win one of Montana’s U.S. Senate seats in 2014.
Four Democrats have also declared their candidacy, but only four of the six total candidates have filed with Montana’s Secretary of State.
