A second deer in Libby is suspected of carrying Chronic Wasting Disease.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced Friday that it was notified of a sample collected from a white-tailed buck and sent to a lab to be tested.
It also says that it expects confirmation of the sample in the next week.
The first detection of a deer with the disease occurred in late May with the death of a white-tailed doe.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks says it is working closely with the City of Libby and Lincoln County to develop a CWD surveillance plan and asks that residents in the area report deer that appear sick.
CWD is a fatal disease that causes holes and swelling in the brains of deer, elk and moose.
It also says that while there is no known transmission of CWD to humans, pets, or livestock, it does warn that the disease could cause significant population declines in at-risk animals if it is left unmanaged.
