A lightning-caused wildfire is burning one-tenth of an acre in Yellowstone National Park near Canyon Village. It’s the Park’s first wildfire of the year.
Park officials say hikers on the Seven Mile Hole trail detected the wildfire Wednesday on a steep, rocky slope near the Yellowstone River. A Park statement says the Seven Mile Hole Fire is not accessible by foot, and firefighters are monitoring the fire from the canyon rim.
Officials say it doesn’t pose a threat to park visitors at this time.
Earlier this week, lightning struck Yellowstone’s historic Mount Holmes Fire Lookout and burned it to the ground, leaving behind its stone foundation. The lookout was built in 1931 and eligible to be included on the National Register of Historic Places.
A radio repeater was also damaged. The Park has temporarily closed the summit and part of the Mount Holmes Trail.
Fire danger in Yellowstone is moderate.
