The Montana Secretary of State oversees elections and election laws, maintains records on legislation and business filings, and serves on the state Board of Land Commissioners, among other duties. Seven candidates are vying for the position in the primary election.

A Montana Republican primary candidate for Secretary of State is calling an ethics complaint lodged against her on Jan. 27  by Montana Democrats a “desperate attack.” The current Chief of Staff for Secretary of State says Democrats have nothing on her.

Candidates for statewide offices in Montana are gearing up for next year’s primaries. Democratic Montana Senator Bryce Bennett announced his campaign for Secretary of State in May. He spoke with YPR News’ Jess Sheldahl about advocating for voting access, election security and how he’d work across the aisle if elected.

A campaign finance reform group has called out a move by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Rosendale for allegedly moving money around to skirt campaign finance laws. They said it’s another sign Rosendale is trying to hide who is donating to his campaign.

The House Education Committee approved an interim study bill to review the current structure of the Montana University system.

In 1994, the Montana Board of Regents took the separate campuses and consolidated them under either the University of Montana or Montana State University.

Representative Kathy Kelker, D-Billings, said House Joint Resolution 27 would look at how that reorganization has fared over the past 2 dozen years.
