A grizzly bear was detected in the Bitterroot National Forest about 15 miles west of Stevensville last week, according to a Montana FWP press release. Although there's no resident population of grizzlies in the Bitterroot, bear managers consider the area an important link between griz populations in the Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide ecosystems.

Affordable Housing Advocates Look To Montana Legislature For Help

There are plenty of infrastructure priorities jockeying for scarce state dollars as the Montana Legislature meets this winter, but, with housing costs a burden for many modest-income Montanans, advocates and some lawmakers want to spend state money boosting affordable housing projects.

A wide swath of wilderness north of Yellowstone National Park will be protected from new mining claims over the next two decades.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has signed an order that protects 30-thousand acres in Montana's Paradise Valley after proposals were introduced to start two new gold mines there.

A Canadian mining company and a pair of conservation groups have finalized agreements they say will protect two tributaries of the Yellowstone River and part of a crucial migration corridor for thousands of elk from Yellowstone National Park.

The Interior Department Thursday said it will lift Endangered Species Act protections for grizzly bears in the Yellowstone National Park region.

Those protections have been in place for more than 40 years.
