The Flathead National Forest is hosting an open house on a proposed timber sale near Bigfork.
The open house for the Bug Creek Forest Health and Fuels Reduction Project happens February 6 at the Swan Lake Ranger Station in Bigfork. The agency will have specialists on hand to answer questions, it’s taking public comment on the proposal until February 16.
The proposal calls for commercial thinning of about 2,400 acres, and a combination of thinning, controlled burning and fuels removal on another 2,600 acres. The project would add 17 miles of new permanent roads to the forest, as well as 15 miles of new, non-motorized recreational trails.
The Forest Service’s goals for the project are primarily to reduce the risk of catastrophic fires, and, “create and maintain a cost-efficient road network for long term resource management that retains access for land management, wildland fire suppression and recreation.”
