A nine-year-old boy in Colorado took his own life on the first week of school this year. The tragedy highlighted a pervasive problem in the state and in the Mountain West region as a whole -- the high suicide rate -- especially among youth. Goal Academy in Pueblo, Colorado is a charter program with high schools around the state that focuses on both academic and mental wellbeing.

Monday was World Suicide Prevention Day. Here in the Mountain West, we have some of the highest suicide rates in the country.

Montana has the distinction for being one of the top states in the nation for its suicide rate and the problem is getting worse. Providers hope the launch of a new psychiatry residency program will stop that trend - especially among Native Americans and veterans.

The House just passed a bill to create a 9-1-1 type service nationwide for suicide prevention. This change could be especially important for our region, which has some of the highest suicide rates in the country.

Our region ranks in the top ten for suicide. A new study from the University of Utah shows there may be a reason for that.

The Bullock Administration awarded $372,000 to nine community organizations, health care providers, and schools to fund suicide prevention efforts. The money will be used to expand existing programs or to launch new evidence-based efforts.

Bozeman Police Officer Kills Wife, Self

A Bozeman police officer killed his wife and himself at their home over the weekend.

Gallatin County officials on Monday identified the dead as 31-year-old Danielle Heninger and 40-year-old Zach Heninger. Zach Heninger, a 12-year veteran of the police force, was off duty.

MSU Suicide Summit

A suicide prevention task force said there’s been a significant increase in the use of mental health services among college students, but the campuses don’t have the resources to meet the demand.

The Montana Board of Regents heard the report at its September meeting at City College in Billings. After hearing the report, the regents told campus leaders they want to campuses to act.
