Meeting Scheduled Tuesday For Updates On Smurfit-Stone Site

Representatives of state and federal environmental agencies will give an update on the polluted Smurfit-Stone mill near Frenchtown Tuesday, June 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the fire hall in Frenchtown.

Sara Sparks is the Environmental Protection Agency’s remedial project manager for the contaminated former pulp and paper mill alongside the Clark Fork River.

“We will have our risk assessors with us, both for human health and ecological risk. We will be talking about the additional data that we will be collecting at the site this summer to finish up our risk assessments," Sparks says.

EPA and Montana Department of Environmental Quality officials are expected to tell members of the Smurfit-Stone Community Advisory Group that the high spring runoff had no adverse impact on the contaminated site.

Tuesday’s meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at the fire hall in Frenchtown.
