Two backpackers reported shooting an adult female grizzly bear in self-defense in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness south of Troy on Friday. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are currently investigating the incident.

A black bear was euthanized in Glacier National Park yesterday after the bear suffered a fatal injury during a hazing attempt.

The bear was spotted at the Many Glacier Campground, where many hikers were returning to their vehicles in a parking lot near the full campground.

Rangers first tried to encourage the bear to leave the campground by voice, but were unsuccessful. A ranger then fired a rubber projectile hazing round which struck the bear in the abdomen causing a fatal injury. Rangers then fired a second shot from a shotgun to euthanize the bear after removing people from nearby campsites.

When bears become habituated to visitor areas, they also become more likely to seek food, destroy property or display aggressive behavior towards humans.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reminds recreationalists to take steps to prevent conflicts with bears by making noise, especially around berry patches, densely forested areas and near streams, and carrying bear spray.
