Outdoor enthusiasts are now able to navigate trails via smartphone app

The Billings Metropolitan Planning Organization is developing a new app to bring the trails of Billings to the fingertips of smartphone users.

The Heritage Trail Tour Map app will feature navigation for pedestrians and cyclists.

“We have a really great trail system here and this makes it a little more accessible for people to find it,” says Elyse Monat,  active transportation planner for MPO.

App users can choose different routes on the trail system depending on if they want to get there as quickly as possible or if they want a good workout. Bike riders can use the app to find one of the newly installed downtown bike racks. Monat says the app will also allow MPO to update trails as soon as new projects are built.

“If there’s a new trail that comes online we can add that real time into the app, whereas the map we have, we do it every two years or so. So they aren’t as up to date as they could be,” Monat says.

The app is scheduled to launch for the public by late September.
