Montana’s U.S. Rep. Matt Rosendale is named as a defendant in a lawsuit that accuses the National Rifle Association of using shell companies to illegally give up to $35 million to Republican candidates.
The lawsuit alleges Rosendale received up to $383,000 from the NRA and illegally coordinated with the company. Federal law prohibits candidates for federal office from accepting contributions from corporations, according to the lawsuit.
The complaint says the alleged illegal contributions to Rosendale stem from his unsuccessful bid against U.S. Sen. Jon Tester in 2018.
The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in Washington D.C. by a gun control nonprofit founded by former Democratic representative Gabby Giffords.
The NRA told the Associated Press it has “full confidence in its political activities and remains eager to set the record straight.”
Rosendale’s office did not respond to requests for comment by deadline.
