Montana Wildfire Update For August 16, 2021

The roughly 171,000-acre Richard Spring Fire south of Colstrip reached 65 percent contained over the weekend, up from 0 percent containment Friday.

Northern Cheyenne Disaster & Emergency Services changed the evacuation status of Lame Deer, Muddy Cluster and Rosebud Cut Across to evacuation warning for residents without medical conditions, according to Inciweb. A warning means there’s a high likelihood that evacuation will be necessary in those areas.

The Rosebud County Fire Warden and Sheriff lowered Ashland’s evacuation status to evacuation alert, which means residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

Pre-evacuation notices are still in effect for Rosebud Creek, from Greenleaf Creek to Cherry Creek, and Lame Deer Divide Road. Highway 212 is closed to nonresidents between Broadus and Crow Agency.

Fire crews are patrolling the northern boundary of the fire while targeting hot spots on the eastern and southwestern perimeters, according to Inciweb. A red flag warning is in effect until Tuesday afternoons due to temperatures around 100 degrees and dry, windy conditions.

These wildfire updates prioritize the latest information on incidents that could impact public health and safety. This is not a comprehensive list of fires burning in the state. The fires we report on will vary as information changes.

August 16, 3:46 p.m.

Location: Southwest of Colstrip

Size: 170,848 acres

Containment: 65 percent

Evacuation orders and warnings: Rosebud County Fire Warden and Rosebud County Sheriff have downgraded the evacuation status for the community of Ashland, including the Ashland Divide, Rabbit Town, North Tongue River Road, and the St. Labre Indian Academy Campus, from Level 3 “Go Now” stage to a Level 1 “Be Ready” stage.

The Northern Cheyenne Disaster & Emergency Services have downgraded the evacuation status for the community of Lame Deer, Muddy Cluster, and Rosebud Cut Across from Level 3 “Go Now” to Level 2 “Set” stage for all those who do not have medical conditions. Pre-evacuation notices remain in effect for Rosebud Creek from Greenleaf Creek to Cherry Creek and the Lame Deer Divide Road located on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation south of Lame Deer.

Major closures: Highway 212 is currently closed between Broadus and Crow Agency to all non-residents. Residents should continue to check Rosebud County Sheriff’s and DES Facebook pages, Northern Cheyenne Disaster & Emergency Services Facebook page, as well as the Richard Spring InciWeb page, as evacuation and road closure status are being evaluated frequently and could change rapidly.

Please avoid unnecessary travel in these areas for the safety of fire crews and be aware of loose livestock.

Conditions: Critical fire weather conditions will continue through Tuesday afternoon with hot, dry, and breezy conditions. There is also the chance of primarily dry showers or thunderstorms to produce gusty and erratic outflow winds up to 40 mph across the fire area Monday evening. A strong cold front crosses the area late Tuesday afternoon and will bring cooler, cloudier, more humid, and breezy conditions. Additionally, the chances for precipitation will increase through the remainder of the week.

Meteorologists have issued a Red Flag Warning through Tuesday afternoon associated with temperatures near 100, relative humidity 9-12%, and the potential for gusty winds. These conditions are critical fire thresholds and could result in increased potential for spot fires especially where terrain aligns with predicted wind directions. There is also the chance for thunderstorms to produce gusty and erratic outflow winds up to 40-50 mph across the fire area Monday evening.

Please be alert for the potential of rapidly changing fire conditions.
