RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:
The New York Post is known for its catchy and sensational headlines, like "Koch Kicks Butt" when ex-New York Mayor Ed Koch pushed a smoking ban.
ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:
Or "Power Losses Hobble Gobble" - that was the headline for a blackout on Thanksgiving day.
MONTAGNE: These headlines are credited to longtime New York Post journalist Vincent Musetto who died yesterday. Musetto also wrote what is easily the most famous newspaper headline of all time - "Headless Body In Topless Bar."
SHAPIRO: That headline is so ingrained in the national psyche, the phrase has been used on T-shirts. It's even the title of a movie.
MONTAGNE: Musetto's competitors at The New York Times paid tribute. Obituary writer Margelit Fox hailed the headless headline for, quote, "its verbless audacity, arresting parallel adjectives and forceful trochaic slams." Vincent Musetto was 74 years old. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
