The "quiet waters" initiative recommends restrictions on motorized watercraft on several major water systems in Montana.

On Friday, Montana's Fish and Wildlife Commission is expected to vote on the so-called “quiet waters” initiative proposed last year.

The initiative came from the group Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, and recommends restrictions on motorized watercraft on several major water systems in Montana.

The Commission says comments submitted by the public on the proposed new rules ran more than two-to-one against them. It held public eight public hearings across the state, from Kalispell to Miles City. The Commission says an even greater proportion of those who attended opposed the rule than those who favored it.

On Friday The Commission is required to amend, adopt, or decide not to adopt the rule proposal.

The hearing at Montana WILD in Helena Friday is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and could go all day. It will be live-streamed to Fish, Wildlife and Parks regional headquarters locations in Kalispell, Missoula, Bozeman, Great Falls, Billings, Glasgow and Miles City.
