With the eastern entrance to Glacier National Park closed, congestion along Going-to-the-Sun Road is so bad this season, the park had to close the West Glacier entrance at times. The park is now considering a ticketed reservation system.
The reservation requirement would only apply to visitors hoping to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road, which opened from West Glacier to Rising Sun campground near the eastern edge of the park earlier this month. The rule would apply from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Park Spokesperson Gina Kerzman says the park entrance fee and an additional $2 reservation fee would be paid on recreation.org. Half of the reservations for a particular day would be made available 30 days in advance, and the remaining half made available 48 hours ahead of time.
Kerzman says Park Superintendent Jeff Mow has been holding meetings with local chambers of commerce about the proposal and says it could be in effect by the end of July at the earliest and would run through Labor Day.
