An exhibit of mixed media paintings and a paper sculpture that explores the relationship between written language and visuals images is on display at MSU-Billings through October 13, 2016.
Nishiki Sugawara-Beda, associate professor of art at the University of Idaho, immigrated to the U.S. from Japan as a young adult. Her exhibition - "Word Terminal" - is supported by the Idaho Commission on the Arts/National Endowment for the Arts.
Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, the director of the Northcutt Steele Gallery, said the exhibit consists of seven paintings and a large suspended paper sculptural instillation.
“She’s created a group of subtle, layered painting and immersive paper sculptures
that are installed in the gallery that respond to her experiments and experience with Japanese calligraphy and Sumi-e ink painting, “ said Gilbertson.
During the gallery talk Gilbertson was looking forward to hearing Sugawara-Beda address the relationship between written language and her visual images, and overview of her process and evolution of this work.
The Northcutt-Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building at MSU-Billings. It is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
