Grass Fires Keep Crews Busy

Fire crews are responding to a few grassland burns this week in southern Montana and northern Wyoming.

The Seventy-Six Fire burning in tall grass and brush in Big Horn County has grown to just over a thousand acres of private land and is now 50 percent contained. Thirty five fire personnel, 10 engines, two overhead units and one helicopter are working to secure the fire lines. Crews hope to return the fire to the landowner on July 16. The cause of the Seventy-Six Fire is unknown.

A wildfire 9 miles northeast of Forsyth in Rosebud County kept firefighters busy Wednesday night.

The Black Butte Fire burned just over 1,400 acres of brush and tall grass on private land and showed active fire behavior with running and spotting before being contained around 10 A.M. Thursday. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Neiber Fire burning south of Worland, Wyoming, exploded overnight to more than 13,000 acres of grass and sage brush because of critical fuel values, steep and inaccessible terrain and breezy conditions.

Firefighters from several agencies and 10 overhead units are working to contain the fire in hot, dry and windy conditions. The Neiber Fire is now threatening oil field and priority sage grouse habitat. It is 35 percent contained and the cause is unknown.
