Blackfeet Nation has received a federal grant to track elk movement and migration patterns on the tribe’s reservation in northern Montana.
The $200,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will support the tribe’s efforts to study migration routes, habitat use and potential barriers to elk movement on the reservation.
Increased human activity has affected migration behavior and travel routes, resulting in habitat loss, over-exploitation and climate change.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is giving more than $6.6 million in Tribal Wildlife Grants to more than a dozen states. The grants will help with more than 30 projects that conserve wildlife habitat and species that are sacred to Native American heritage and culture.
