Matthew Haynes is a multi-genre writer, professor, and coffee shop owner in his hometown of Butte, America.  His work scours the human experience, interrogating loss, ambivalence, and difficult choices, all with a needlepoint specificity. In this interview, Matthew speaks to absence, the lure of Hawaii, and his own version of paradise.

About the Author:

Matthew R. K. Haynes is the author of the novel,  Moving Towards Home, and the novella,  Friday.  His short stories and essays have been published in several journals including  West BranchThe Normal SchoolHawaii Pacific Review, and  Yellow Medicine Review.  He is a State of Idaho Fiction Fellow, Lambda Literary Fiction Fellow, and Lambda Literary Fiction Writer-in-Residence.  He lives in his hometown of Butte, Montana.

About the Collection:

Give Us What We Want is a collection of linked short stories that take place in Hawai'i and explore the lives of locals, transplants, and tourists—of paradise and the daily grind, of how we come to understand people and place, of the joyous, delicate, and dreadful walk through life, and of the things we desire, or think we do.  Stories from this collection have been published in West Branch and The Normal School, and have been finalists for the Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Award and the Tennessee Williams SAS Short Fiction Award and semi-finalist for the Mid-American Review Sherwood Anderson Award.
