Montana's chief medical officer is resigning from his post. Dr. Greg Holzman has led much of the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to his resignation letter, Holzman will stay on as State Medical Officer until April 16 to help with vaccine distribution in Montana and his replacement’s transition.

Holzman didn’t say why he was resigning, but that he plans to continue his career in medicine and public health from outside state government.

He wrote in the letter that he "truly enjoyed" his time working for the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.

Holzman’s letter is dated Thursday, the day after Gov. Greg Gianforte announced he would repeal the statewide mask mandate put in place by former Gov. Steve Bullock.

Holzman has worked for the state health department since 2015.
