Montana’s U.S. Senators split their votes along party lines, as expected, on the two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Republican Daines voted to acquit. In a statement, he said impeachment would have meant ignoring Montanans who voted for Trump in the last election and silencing those who plan to vote for him later this year. Daines is up for reelection this year.
Democrat Tester voted to convict. Ahead of the vote, he said he believes President Trump abused his power by withholding military aid from an ally for personal political gain and that he obstructed legitimate oversight by a coequal branch of government.
Wyoming’s U.S. Senators Republicans Mike Enzi and John Barrasso both voted to acquit.
Barrasso said in a statement the time for political stunts is over and that the Senate had a fair trial.
Enzi said in a statement he believes the House failed to prove its case for the two impeachment articles. Enzi voted guilty for both articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton in 1999.
