The Milk River Project has provided water to tribes, irrigators and municipalities in northern Montana for a century. And it's overdue for major repairs.

Montana is expected to receive billions of dollars to repair its highways, expand internet connectivity and improve drinking water lines as part of an infrastructure bill President Joe Biden signed Monday.

The public has until Sept 2 to comment on the Bureau of Reclamation’s draft environmental assessment on proposed modifications to Fresno Dam, a key part of the Milk River Project along Montana’s Hi-Line. The 82-year-old dam is aging and improvements are a priority.

A federal magistrate judge in Montana has dismissed a lawsuit against the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation that alleged an irrigation project in northwest Montana harms threatened bull trout.

The water is back on in the Milk River Project St. Mary Canal for the first time in nearly five months. Thursday's water release comes following repairs to a critical drop structure.

Federal funding will help cover roughly half the cost of rebuilding two areas of the Milk River Project St. Mary Canal. Irrigators say this is a much-needed increase.
