High School Students Tackle Syria and Refugees at Model UN

Some Montana high school students added their perspective to the war in Syria and how to deal with the war’s refugees.

Harrison Fagg, a senior at Billings Central High School, was one of the students serving as a delegate at the Model United Nations (MUN) conference. He said he found it interesting just how international the issues of the refugee crisis are and how it affects so many more nations than just the Persian Gulf and Middle Eastern nations. He said he learned just how difficult and far reaching the problems of ISIS, radical Islam, and the refugees are for the world. Fagg was representing Syria.

MUN is an authentic simulation of the structure and workings of the UN General Assembly, Security Council, and numerous committees.

Bethany Honcoop just graduated from  Montana State University Billings (MSUB) with a degree in political science. She was back on campus helping these students navigate  governments, negotiations, and diplomacy. She served as the vice chair of the General Assembly. She said,” I think it’s (Model UN) a really good experience to have some real world applications for these big issues so they understand it better.”

Model UN was a one-day conference on May 9, 2016 at MSUB.
