Yellowstone Bison

Members of the Interagency Bison Management Plan, including Yellowstone National Park, Montana Tribes and Fish Wildlife and Parks met inn Missoula to review recommendations for managing a growing bison population this winter.

A wild white bison calf was born this June in Yellowstone National Park. The pale-colored animal is not only a statistical rarity, it is significant in Lakota lore.

Montana’s legislature is considering four bison-related bills this session. The two bills that would have helped tribal nations expand bison herds were voted down, while tribal leaders say the surviving bills could harm long-standing bison management on reservations.
